Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan pengaruh pengalaman masa kecil dan penyesuaian diri pada tokoh utama dalam novel The Hate U Give karya Angie Thomas. Penelitian ini berfokus pada ucapan, tindakan, dan pikiran tokoh utama serta narasi dari narator, yang menunjukkan pengaruh dari pengalaman masa kecil dan penyesuaian diri dari Starr Charter. Penelitian ini menerapkan pendekatan psikologis sebagai pendekatan penelitian dan teori sosial psikoanalitik oleh Karen Horney sebagai teori utama. Sesuai dengan teori tersebut, kondisi lingkungan dan sosial adalah suatu hal yang penting sebagai bukti bahwa penyesuaian diri dari tokoh utama benar-benar ada. Analisis data penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif oleh Bruce L. Berg. Data disaring dan dicocokkan oleh penulis sendiri. Dalam menganalisis data, ada tiga proses yang saling berhubungan, berasal dari Miles dan Huberman; reduksi data, tampilan data, serta kesimpulan dan verifikasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman masa kecil dan penyesuaian diri karakter saling berhubungan. Oleh karena itu, terdapat dua poin yang ditemukan, (1) efek dari pengalaman masa kecil dan (2) penyesuaian diri dari karakter utama melalui dua versi dirinya. Pengaruh dari pengalaman masa kecil menyebabkan trauma interpersonal dan kecemasan yang diderita oleh karakter utama. Kata kunci: Pengalaman masa kecil, penyesuaian diri, kondisi sosial, lingkungan.

The purpose of this study is to discover the effects of childhood experience and the self-adjustment of the main character within The Hate U Give novel by Angie Thomas. This study focuses on the utterances, actions, and minds of the main character also the narrations of the narrator, which show the effects of childhood experience and self-adjustment of Starr Charter. This study applied a psychological approach as the approach of the study and psychoanalytic social theory by Karen Horney as the main theory. In line with the theory, the environment and social conditions are matter as a proof that self-adjustment of the main character really exists. The data analysis of this research used qualitative method by Bruce L. Berg. The data were filtered and matched by the writer herself. In analysing the data, there were three related processes which derived from Miles and Huberman; data reduction, data display, and conclusion and verification. The result of this study showed that the childhood experience and self-adjustment of the character were linked each other. Hence, there were found two points, (1) the effects of childhood experience and (2) self-adjustment of the main character through two versions of herself. The effects of childhood experience engendered interpersonal trauma and anxiety which was suffered by the main character.
