Arkeologi merupakan aspek penting dalam kehidupan manusia karena fungsinya dapat mengungkapkan cerita, sejarah, dan budaya yang ada dalam lingkungan masyarakat. Arkeologi membawa banyak nilai bagi masyarakat seperti halnya nilai dalam bentuk artifak dan budaya material. Melalui karya sastra arkeologi juga meliput tema cerita. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan fokus sejarah terutama arkeologi yang mempengaruhi penulis dalam puisi yang berjudul My life as a Subject karya Meghan O’Rourke. Selain itu penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui konstruksi puisi dalam ranah budaya maupun sosial yang menjadi latar belakang munculnya ide-ide dalam puisi tersebut. Penelitian menggunakan penelitian kualitatif sebagai metode untuk mengumpulkan, memilih, dan menganalisis data. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori arkeologi oleh Michel Foucault. Salah satu fokus Focault adalah konsep arkeologi yang membedah berbagai wacana dalam sejarah. Wacana ini adalah teks dalam bentuk serangkaian proposisi sebagai hasil untuk mengekspresikan ide. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa : (1) Terdapat beberapa silmbol yang menyimbolkan beberapa objek yang berkaitan dengan sejarah dan aktivitas manusia. (2) Menunjukkan bahwa budaya dan kondisi sosial memiliki pengaruh besar pada ide-ide penulis yang ditetapkan oleh penulis dalam puisinya. (3) Ekspresi yang terkandung dalam puisi My Life as a Subject menggambarkan kehidupan penulis yang hidup di era kesulitan, hidup sebagai masyarakat golongan kasta bawah, dan dibawah tekanan aturan raja. Archaeology is an important aspect in human life due to its function to express stories, histories, and cultures in society. Archaeology brings many values to the society such as artifacts and material culture. Through literary works, archaeology also covers the theme of the story. This study aims to determine the historical focus especially archaeology which influenced the author in her poem entitled My Life as a Subject by Meghan O’Rourke. This study is to find out the construction of the poem both in the cultural and social sphere that is the background of the emergence of ideas in the poem. This study used qualitative research as a method to collect, select, and analyze the data. The theory used in this study is the archaeology theory by Michel Foucault. One focus of Foucault is the archaeology concept that dissects various discourses in history. This discourse is a form of text in the form of a series of propositions as a result to express the ideas. The result of this study showed that: (1) there are some symbols which symbolize some objects that related to the history and human activity (2) showed that culture and social conditions have a great influence on the ideas set forth by the author in her poem, (3) the expressions contained in My Life as a Subject poem describe the lives of the author who lived during difficulties, lived as a low caste society and under the pressure of the king’s rules.
