This study discusses the different types and functions of prohibition expressions used by parents in The Parent Trap sequel movies. This study applies the theory of the types of prohibition expressions proposed by Alexander (1950) and the functions of prohibition expressions proposed by Van Olmen (2011). Besides, this study uses a descriptive qualitative research design because the data are in the form of phrases and utterances. This study applies an interactive model analysis to discuss the data. The findings of the study show that parents use prohibition expressions in terms of the types of prohibition expressions. They are: verbal prohibition (11 data), nominal prohibition (5 data), prohibition with auxiliary (3 data), prohibition with modal (3 data), prohibition with question tags (4 data), prohibition with gerund (1 datum), prohibition without don’t (1 datum) and other prohibition with sign (1 datum). Moreover, the writer also finds four of the six functions of prohibition expressions. They are: as willful directive (10 data), as non-willful directive (5 data), commissive (4 data), and expressive (10 data) in term major imperative. However, it is quite harder for the writer to find data of make no mistake and never mind in terms of minor imperative on this study.
