THE SARTRE’S EXISTENTIALISM IN CHARACTERS BY HAN KANG’S THE VEGETARIAN Name: Hidayatullah University of Trunojoyo Madura Email: dayato2n@gmail.com Abstract The vegetarian is writen by Han Kang. it is one of interesting novel to be discussed because this novel is ten best book (Book Review) by The New York Times. 2016, this novel has been adopted into a film and the story in this novel is so different from the other process of vegetarian that people can deal with it. Since the different process of vegetarian that creates new phenomenon, it can be categorized as the part of existentialism. This study aims to explore the values of Sartre’s Existentialism which are potrayed in the novel The Vegetarian by Han Kang in order to find out whether the novel can be categorized as Existentialist or not. This study applies a descriptive qualitative research because the data are described and analyzed in the form of word. The data of this study are character’s utterences and author’s narration which contain of the values of Sartre’s Existentialism. The data are collected by applying the intensive reading and reducing. This study uses existentialism theory, especially Sartre’ values of Existentialism. The result of this study shows that The Vegetarian contains ideas of Sartre’s Existentialsm. Those are Existence Precedes Essence, Abandonment or Freedom, anguish and the look. Keywords: Existentislism, Sartre’s Existentialism.
