    ABSTRACT Agustin, Dini. 150511100115. The Interpretation of Auschwitz in Heather Morris’ The Tattooist of Auschwitz Novel: A New Historical Approach. Thesis. English Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Trunojoyo University of Madura. Advisor: Imron Wakhid Harits, Ph.D. Since the novel entitled The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris tells about a Jew insisted on working for the German government under the Nazi regime and he becomes the tattooist of the Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz. This study concerns to analyze the social-political condition of Poland and the notion of Auschwitz interpreted in the novel creating a new discourse. New Historicism theory is used to identify the history portrayed in the novel and it is suitable to create a new discourse related to the Holocaust. In addition, this study is conducted by using qualitative research design because it consists of the characteristics of qualitative method. This study finds the message of author implied in the novel, the social-political condition of Poland, the portraying of Auschwitz interpreted in the novel and new discourse. The message of author in writing The Tattooist of Auschwitz is obtained by finding the author’s purposes to deliver the ideas in writing the novel. It can be seen through the author’s narrations and the characters’ utterances. The analysis of the social-political condition of Poland represents that Heather Morris writes the story of the Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz based on the history. After that, the analysis of new discourse is obtained by the researcher’s perspective. It indicates different notions in portraying of Auschwitz. After analyzing the novel, it can be concluded that Auschwitz dose not only represent as the symbol of the Holocaust. In other words, Auschwitz represents the survivals and survive is a form of heroism. Key Words: New Historicism, Auschwitz, Holocaust, New Discourse
