The purpose of this study was to discover The Role of Family Toward Yeong-hye’s Strange Behavior in The Vegetarian Novel by Han Kang. The family roles were able to be perceived by discovering the eight interlocking concepts of Bowen’s Family System Theory such as Nuclear Family Emotional System, The Differentiation of Self scale, Triangles, Cutoff, Family Projection process, Multigenerational transmission Process, Sibling position, and Societal emotional process. The data of this study were major characters? utterances and narrator?s explanations in the novels. Qualitative research was held in this study. The method of data collections were reading, signifying and noting, and matching. Data were selected and matched by the writer herself. Analysis data in this study applied Robert K. Yin technique. The data were compiled, disassembled, reassembled, interpreted and concluded. The results showed that finally, the writer could find all the family roles toward Yeong-hye’s behavior changing inside The Vegetarian Novel by Han Kang. There are 11 characters who are close to Yeong-hye in the novel. They are Mr. Cheong (Yeong-hye’s Husband), Yeong-hye’s Father, Mother, Brother (Yeong-ho), Sister in law, Sister (In-hye), Brother in law , Ji-woo (In-hye’s son), Hee-joo (a patient in the hospital where Yeong-hye is hospitalized), Doctor, and Nurses. From all the eight interlocking concepts of Bowen’s Family System Theory, seven of them do exist in this study, while one cannot be found inside the novel during the writer did her research. Those seven concepts are (1) Nuclear Family Emotional System, (2) The differentiation of self-scale which explanation is inside the description of subchapter 4.1.1 about Nuclear Family Emotional System, (3) Triangles, (4) Cutoff, (5) Family Projection Process, (6) Sibling position, and (7) Societal emotional process. It is only (8) Multigenerational Transmission Process that does not exist here because this process may happen if the family projection process in the novel explained how differentiation and undifferentiation is passed from a generation to the next generation of the family. Those 8 elements of interlocking concepts in family system by Bowen were discovered concerning on how further creativity development which the transformation could achieve.
