  • A Study of Euphemistic Expressions Used in K.H. Sattar's Recitation Speeches

    Abstraksi

    The purpose of this study aims to explain euphemistic expressions which are delivered by K.H. Sattar. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Burridge’s theory (2012). For the reason in analyzing this topic because there are a number of his speeches contain euphemistic expressions which affects toward the effectiveness in his speech. Methods of data collection used Miles and Huberman techniques. The writer also used descriptive qualitative research design, the data of this study are explained descriptively which suit with devices and functions relate to the statements of the problem as have shown in the form of words, phrases and sentences. The results show that the devices of euphemistic expressions in K.H. Sattar’s speech contains of: Metaphor (16), Part for Whole Substitution (2), Hyperbole (9), Circumlocution (10), Phonological Remodeling (4) and Internal and External Borrowing (2). Meanwhile, the functions of euphemistic expressions delivered by him contains of; Protective euphemism (26) and Ludic Euphemism (17). Keywords: Euphemistic. Device. Euphemistic Expression.
