Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. The advisors: Prof.Dr Suryo Tri Saksono,Mpd., This study aims to find out the adaptation process that occur in the novel into film. In this study, the writer used The Reluctant Fundamentalist novel by Mohsin Hamid in 2007 and The Reluctant Fundamentalist film by Mira Nair in 2012. This study is qualitative study by using the character utterances and author narration both of novel and film as the source of data. The technique of collecting the data was in a three steps. The first step was the writer read the novel and watch the film in several times. The second was the writer read the text reflexively. The third step was read the text interpretively. Whereas, the technique of analyzing the data using descriptive qualitative approach because the data collected are form of words and collected by the writer based on the writer’s interpretation. In this study, the writer analyzed the transposition of modes of engagement in Telling-Showing mode. Moreover, the writer also analyzed the political motive that occur in the adaptation of the novel into film. The result of this study shows that there are any transpositions in the narrative elements such as character and characterization, plot and point of view. There are cutting and adding part in the adaptation process of novel into film. They are an adding new character and characterization. They are Bobby Lincoln, Anse Rainier, Bina, Abu and Ammi. The different plot also appear in the adaptation of the novel into film from the beginning, the middle and ending. Moreover, the point of view in novel and film also different. In the novel, the writer used monologue style but in film it was clearly depiction by giving the actor’s name. Moreover, the political motive in social critique also occur in adaptation novel into film. The director of film wants to give the depiction that muslim is not radical religion. It was clear in some part of film that muslim also have a peaceful and carefull behavior with each other because the novel contains an islamophobia issues in America.
