Abstract :Adaptation is the process of transforming form of art into from one to another. It transforms one medium into another one like as novel into film. Nowadays, there are many films which are adapted from best seller novel. In the adaptation process, some changes occur in the film. Since they are produced in different way. Pursuant to this explanation, this study focuses on the modes of engagement (telling to showing) in narrative element (plot, setting and character) and the adapter’s motive adapted the novel from The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger into film that has the same title. This study aims to explain the process of modes engagement (telling to showing) in adaptation that occurs in the intrinsic element and cultural work issue as the adapter’s motives on The Devil Wears Prada into film. To analyze the adaptation process of the novel into film, the theory of adaptation by Linda Hutcheon is used. There are two process of adaptation. Firstly is modes of engagement, telling to showing. In telling to showing, compressed and expanded are happened in plot, setting and character. Plot has three science that compressed and expanded, there are beginning, middle and ending. In the setting, the process focusses in setting place of the story, however compressed that happened. In the character, there are three character that compressed in the story as the experiencing varied changing process of adaptation. Secondly is cultural work issues as the adapter’s motive adapted from the novel into film. There are three cultural work issue, which are fashion, discipline time and great facilities and reward. This study is conducted using qualitative design because (1) the data collected and analyzed are in the form of words. The data of this study are the words or utterances, dialogue, the characters or author’s narration in both sources of data, (2) the key instrument of this study is the writer herself. After analyzing the novel and the film, it can be conclude that the film experience two processes of adaptation. The process involves two aspect of modes of engagement in narrative elements and cultural work issue in novel into film. Key words: Novel, Film, Modes of Engagement, Cultural work Issue, Adaptation
