    A STUDY OF INTERRUPTIONS IN DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW Aimatul Qoiriyah English Study Program Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences University of Trunojoyo Madura Abstract: Qoiriyah, Aimatul. 15.05.1.1.1.00012. A Study Of Interruptions in David Letterman Show. Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Trunojoyo University of Madura. Advisor: Dr. Masduki, M.Pd This study aims to describe the kinds and strategies of Interruption which is used in David Letterman Show. The two significances of this study are theoretically and practically. Theoretically, this study contributes knowledge about the kinds and strategies of Interruptions. Practically, this study helps hosts or guests to apply the interruption correctly. The data are identified and analyzed based on the theory of the kinds of interruption proposed by Ferguson (1977), and strategies of interruption proposed by Stenstrom (1994). This study was conducted by applying a qualitative research design which proposed by Bogdan and Biklen (1982). The data of this study were the utterances that contain the kinds and strategies of interruptions. The data were collected by using content analysis proposed by Khotari (2004). In analyzing the data, the writer used data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The writer found 23 data belong to kinds of interruptions as the answer of the first research problem. They are categorized simple interruption (12 data), overlaps (3 data), butting-in interruption (5 data), and silent interruption (3 data). There are alert (12 data) and meta-comment (11 data) that belonged to strategies of interruption as the answer of the second of the research problem.
