ABSTRACT This study analyzes one of Colson Whitehead?s novels entitled The Underground Railroad. It is intended to discuss the portrayal of slavery in Georgia, especially in Randall cotton plantation. The aims of this study are to answer: (1) How are slavery in Georgia portrayed in the novel?; (2) What are the ways of Cora?s family dealing with the slavery in the novel? This study use slavery theory that focuses on analyzes the portrayal of slavery in Georgia and the ways of Cora?s family dealing with the slavery in the novel. The narrationand form of word of the character utterances in The Underground Railroad novel by Colson Whitehead are as the data in this study. In line with the features of qualitative research, the data collection is done simultaneously with the data analysis. Furthermore, to analyze this data the writer uses slavery theory. The results of this study show the portrayal of slavery in Georgia and the ways of Cora?s family dealing with the slavery in the novel. The novel entitled The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead tells about how brutality and cruelty the slavery in Georgia. He also writes about the ways of Cora?s family dealing with the slavery in the novel. Keywords: Slavery, Portrayal, Georgia, Cora’s family.
