  • A STUDY OF LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF VERBAL HUMOR USED BY MALE AND FEMALE COMICS IN STAND UP COMEDY SHOW

    Abstraksi

    This study aims to reveal the linguistic aspects of verbal humor types which are used by stand up comics either male or female in stand up comedy show. This study uses qualitative research method. Content analysis was the employed approach in the context and interactive method is the data analysis method. The source of data was from American and British stand up comedy show videos in 1990 until 2018, while the data was taken from the utterances of the comics and the audience’s responses which consist of the types of linguistic aspects of verbal humor and how male and female comics use the linguistic aspects of verbal humor. The data findings demonstrate that there are 158 data. The data are classified into three types of linguistic aspects of verbal humor: joke technique (39 data), the use of figurative language (39 data), and linguistic feature of joke telling (80 data). Moreover, similar and different use of linguistic aspects of verbal humor sub types are categorized based on gender identity of the comics. The similarity of male and female linguistic aspects of verbal humor types use is found in some sub types: implication (4 data), wordplay (3 data), hyperbole (32 data), disfluencies (13 data), repetition (28 data), and discourse markers (33 data). Meanwhile, the difference occurs in some sub types: ridicule (10 data of male and 6 data of female), politeness (16 data of male and 7 data of female), and formulaicity (6 data of male).
