This study concerns on sociopragmatic failure in English Vunglish movie 2012. This study aims at explaining the types of sociopragmatic failure found in English Vinglish movie using the theory proposed by Muir (2011) and the factors of sociopragmatic failure behind the occurences of sociopragmatic failure using the theory of the factors of sociopragmatic failure proposed by Oliveira (2017). This study employs descriptive qualitative design as the research design. Further, observation through note-taking technique is conducted to obtain the data with the writer as the key instrument. Interactive data analysis, then, is chosen to analyze and explain the data. The data of this study are taken from the characters’ dialogues in English Vinglish movie. The research shows the types and contributing factors to sociopragmatic failure. Due to the types, they are productive sociopragmatic failure (6 data) and interpretative sociopragmatic failure (6 data). In terms of the factors of the occurrences of sociopragmatic failure, they are discourse asymmetry (5 data), pragmatic asymmetry (4 data), and sociolinguistic asymmetry (3 data).
