ABSTRACT This study is about pleonasm used by English department students of the fourth semester in their English Department Students Essays. The objectives of this study are: (1) to explain the types of pleonasm which are used by English department students of the fourth semester in their English Department Students Essays (2) to explain the functions of pleonasms which are used by English Department of the fourth semester in their English Department Student’s Essays. This study applied a descriptive qualitative research since the data were in the form of word rather than in the form of number. The sources of data were the English department students of the fourth semester in their English Department Students Essays. The data of this study are all the words which contain pleonasm. To analyze the data, the writer used interactive data analysis from Miles and Huberman (1994). Based on the analysis, the writer found four types of eight types of pleonasm. Those are Multiple affirmation (1 data), emphatic reflexive pronouns (6 data), overlap (8 data) and prolixity (4 data). The other result of this study : the writer found two of three functions of pleonasm, those are 8 data of clarity function and 11 data of emphasis function.
