An Analysis of Pronunciation Errors on English Sounds Produced by English Department Students of Trunojoyo UniversityPenulis : Ananda ChoirunnisaDosen Pembimbing I : Misnadin, S.S., M.A., Ph.D.Dosen Pembimbing II :Abstraksi
AbstractionThe present study aimed at investigating pronunciation errors produced by English department students of Trunojoyo University as English learners as a foreign language (EFL). Twenty participants who were in fifth semester were recruited. They were asked to pronounce 75 English words containing consonants [v], [?], [ð], [?] and vowels [?], [æ], [?], [?], [?], [e?], [??], [??] as stimuli. The consonants and vowels were determined based on consonants and vowels distinctions between Indonesian and English since the participants’ first language is Indonesian. This study applied descriptive qualitative method using convenience technique sampling to collect the data. Meanwhile, the data were transcribed using phonetic transcription (impressionistic approach) to identify the errors. In this study, the researcher attempted to find types of pronunciation errors produced by the participants (i.e. sound insertion, sound deletion, and sound substitution) and investigated consonants and vowels which were mispronounced by the participants. Having analyzed the data, the researcher found that the most frequent types of pronunciation errors produced by the participants was sound substitution (83% of 20 participants produced this error), while sound deletion and sound insertion were respectively 67% and 63%. Furthermore, they produced errors not only in pronouncing [v], [?], [ð], [?], [?], [æ], [?], [?], [?], [e?], [??], [??], but also in pronouncing [t], [?], [k], [b], [d], [d ?], [j], [w], [?], [?] in certain positions in English words. The researcher found that Indonesian phonological interference, problem of silent letter, pronouncing the word as it spelled, overgeneralization, and hypercorrection were the causes contributing to errors. Besides, the researcher found that the position of consonants in English words also stimulates the participants to produce errors of pronunciation.
