  • A Study of Address Terms in The Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Series

    Abstraction

    This study focused on address terms performed by all the characters in The Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. This study has two objectives. Both are to analyze the types of address terms based on Toni and Aliakbari’s theory (2008) and the functions of address terms based on the theory proposed by Yang (2010). Besides, this study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative design. The method of collecting data which was used is content analysis method proposed by Kothari (2004).The result of this study revealed two findings. First, there are ten types of address terms but the writer only found nine types. Those are 21 data of personal name, 15 data of title terms, 4 data of occupation bound-terms, 2 data of kinship family or relative terms, 12 data of honorific or term of formality, 10 data of term of intimacy, 1 data of personal pronoun, 18 data of descriptive phrase, and 2 data of zero address terms. In addition, the writer found four new types of address terms. They are 12 data of plural terms, 6 data of familiar terms, 4 data of slang terms, and 3 data of mockery terms. Second, there are three functions of address terms performed by the characters. There are 25 data of degree of identity, 57 data of degree of intimacy, and 27 data of degree of respect. On the other hands, the writer found 2 data included in new function of address terms called as neutral function.
