ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan karakteristik kelas sosial dalam novel The Selection karya Kiera Cass'. Selain itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi beberapa konflik yang dialami oleh karakter yang berbeda kelas dalam novel 'The Selection karya Kiera Cass. Data penelitian ini adalah ujaran karakter dan narasi penulis yang menggambarkan kelas sosial dan konflik kelas. Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dalam penelitian ini. Penulis adalah instrumen kunci. Dia mengumpulkan data melalui membaca dan sistem pengkodean. Dalam menganalisis data, penulis menggunakan teori Marxis yang diajukan oleh Karl Marx, khususnya kelas sosial dan konflik kelas. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan tentang karakteristik setiap kelas-kelas sosial. Dalam analisis ini, ada dua jenis kelas. Kelas pertama adalah kelas Atas. Anggota kelas ini berasal dari keluarga kerajaan. Mereka adalah kaum teratas dalam masyarakat. Selain itu, mereka memiliki ekonomi dan pekerjaan yang lebih baik. Itu karena kekayaan mereka. Kelas kedua adalah kelas bawah. Orang-orang di kelas ini umumnya berasal dari tingkat bawah masyarakat. Mereka memiliki penghasilan lebih kecil. Itu karena pekerjaan mereka hanya membutuhkan sedikit keterampilan. Sebagian besar dari mereka bekerja sebagai pembantu dan pembersih rumah. Perbedaan kelas tersebut menciptakan konflik antar kelas. Hak tersebut disebabkan karena adanya beberapa penindasan yang diberikan oleh kelas atas terhadap kelas bawah. Penindasan tersebut digambarkan melalui eksploitasi, intimidasi dan ngebully. Hal tersebut disebabkan adanya kekuatan dominan dari kelas atas. Mereka merasa lebih superior daripada kelas di bawah mereka. Karena itu mereka melakukan penindasan yang menyebabkan konflik. ABSTRACT The purposes of this study was to describe the characteristics of social classes in the novel Kiera Cass’ The Selection. Beside that, this study was purposed to identify some conflicts that are experienced by the characters with different classes in the novel Kiera Cass’ The Selectin. The data of this study were character’s utterances and author’s narrations that describe social classes and class conflicts. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method in this study. The writer is the key instrument. He collected the data through close reading and coding system. In analyzing the data, the writer uses theory of Marxist proposed by Karl Marx, particularly the social class and class conflict. The result of this study shows about the characteristics of social classes. In this analysis, there are two kinds of classes. The first class is Upper class. Members of this class come from a royalty. They are the top elite one in the society. Beside that, they have better economic and occupation. It is because of their wealth. The second class is lower class. People in this class commonly come from the bottom level of society. They have smaller income. It is because their occupations just require little skill. Most of them work as servant and housecleaner. Those class differentiations create conflicts between classes. It is because there are some oppression which is given by upper to the lower class. The oppressions are portrayed through exploitation, intimidation and bullying. It occurs because there is dominant power from the upper class. They feel superior than the class below them.
