ABSTRACT This study focuses on the types and the functions of affixes found in Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts. This study aims to find and explain the types of affixation found in Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts using theory of types of affixation proposed by Lieber (2009) and Plag (2003) and the functions of affixes theory proposed by Stockwell and Minkova (2001).This study uses descriptive qualitative as the research design. This study uses Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts as the source of the data, while the data are the words which contain affixes which are found in Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts. To collect the data, the writer uses content analysis method in which the writer becomes the key instrument of the research. Then, the writer continued to analyze and explain the data used interactive data analysis. This study shows the finding of the types of affixation and functions of affixes occur in Malala Yousafzai’ speech texts. There are 499 data of affixation found. In Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts used three types of affixation. The three types of affixation are prefixes 8 data, suffixes 432 data and circumfixes 9 data. The data of prefixes are divided into four sub-types: locative prefixes 1 data, temporal prefixes 2 data, negative prefixes 5 data, while quantitative prefix are not found. The data of suffixes are divided into four sub-types: nominal suffixes 197 data, verbal suffixes 159 data, adjectival suffixes 66 data, and adverbial suffixes 10 data. The dominant types of affixation are suffix. Then, in terms of functions of affixes, the data which are found in Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts is classified into two types: to derive 116 data and to inflect 333 data. The most functions of affixes which are found in Malala Yousafzai’s speech texts is to inflect because there are so many data that relate to grammar use without changing the word meaning. Keywords: Affixes, Types of Affixation, Functions of Affixes, and Malala Yousafzai’s Speech Texts.
