  • An analysis of lexical cohesion in the lyrics of Ed Sheraan songs Divide Album

    Abstraksi

    This study aims to investigate the types of cohesion devices used in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics on Divide Albumand the contribution of types lexical in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics on Divide Album. This study uses Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory to analyze the types of lexical cohesion used in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics on Divide Album. This study uses descriptive qualitative design. The source of data are Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics on Divide Album. They consist of Perfect, Castle On The Hill, Eraser, Dive, Shape Of You, Save Myself, Nancy Mulligan, Supermarket Flower, Bibia Be Ye Ye , How Would You Feel, Galway Girl, Happier, Heart Don’t Break Around Here and What Do I Know. The data are words, phrases and sentence used in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics. The main instrument in collecting, classifying, and analysis the data is the researcher himself. The method to collect the data is content. The method to analyze the data is interactive data analysis. The findings of this study show that all types of lexical cohesion are utilized in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics on Divide Album. They are; repetition, synonym, general word, superordinate. While for collocation the researcher found 6 lyrics of songs that use collocation in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics on Divide Album.
