ABSTRACT This study focused on the self-initiated repair in the Ellen show. This study aimed to explain the strategies of self-initiated repair which were used in the Ellen show. It also aimed to explain the positions of self-initiated repair strategies which were found in the Ellen show. In addition to analyze the data, this study used the theory proposed by Schegloff et al. (1977). Moreover, this study was conducted by using a qualitative research because the data were in the form of word, phrase and sentence. The data of this study were the utterances which were found in the six talk shows of Ellen show. The method of collecting data in this study was content analysis and the writer used interactive method to analyze the data. The findings of this study show six strategies of self-initiated repair during conversation. The six strategies of self-initiated repair are ‘trouble source correction’ (2 data), ‘searching for a word’ (3 data), ‘hesitation pause’ (4 data) ‘false start’ (5 data) ‘repetition’ (10 data) and ‘immediate lexical change’ (1 data). The most common strategies used by the participant was ‘repetition’. Moreover, all the strategies of self-initiated repair applied in two positions; they were ‘within the same turn’ (24 data), and ‘in the third turn’ (1 data). There is no data belonging to type of ‘in the turn transition space’. Key words: Self-initiated repair, the strategies and the positions of self-initiated repair, and Ellen show
