ABSTRACT This study focused on English borrowing words specifically English loanwords in Indonesian novel of Pramoedya Ananta Toer Bumi Manusia. This study analyzes the types of English loanwords, and the functions of English loanwords found in the novel Bumi Manusia. The data were analyzed and classified based on the types of English loanwords proposed by Haugen (1950), and the functions of English loanwords proposed by Takashi (1990). This study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative research. The source of data is the Indonesian novel of Bumi Manusia by Pramodya Ananta Toer, while the data were the words in the sentences of the novel which include of English loanwords. The method of collecting data used content analysis method. In the finding, the writer found 28 data which belong to English loanwords. The writer found two types of English loanwords, that were necessary and unnecessary loanwords. The writer also found the functions of English loanwords, that were to fill lexical gaps, to substitute for native equivalent to achieve some kind of special effect, to euphemism in certain case.
