    Abstraction

    This study focuses on the move and the step of move used in thesis abstract of English Study Program students of UTM. This study aims to explain the move and step of move which are found in the thesis abstract of English Study Program students of UTM. In addition, to analyze the data, this study uses two theories of genre based analysis, IMRD (Introduction-Method-Result-Discussion) 2004 model and CaRS (Create a Research Space) 1990 model proposed by Swales. This study is conducted by applying a descriptive qualitative research design since the data are in the form of words. Moreover the data are collected through content analysis method. The source of data is thesis abstract written by English Study Program student of UTM which graduated on September 2016, and the data of this study are the words of the abstract which construct the move and step of move. The results of the research show that from 46 data, based on the constituent moves, the introduction move appears on the 46 abstracts, the method move appears on 46 abstracts, the result move appears on the 45 abstracts, and the discussion move appears with two steps of claiming centralty and making topic generalization. The result move appears with only one step of announcing principal findings. While the mehod move and discussion move are dismatch with any steps of CARS model.
