Abstract This study aims to investigate the types of overlaps and reasons of overlaps in Presidential First Debate of U.S.A 2016. In addition to analysis the data, this study uses two theories. Those are Schegloff (2000) and Wardaugh (1985). The study uses descriptive qualitative design. The source of data is the transcription of Presidential First Debate of U.S.A 2016. The data are the utterances or phrases in Presidential First Debate of U.S.A 2016 which contain overlaps. The main instrument in collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data is the writer herself. The method to collect the data is content analysis. Besides, the method to analyze the data is interractive model analysis. After analyzing the data, the writer found that the highest overlaps are produced by Hillary Clinton. There are 36 data of overlaps in Presidential Fisrt Debate of U.S.A 2016. The most occurance types of overlaps are competitive overlaps as shown by 22 data, followed by non-competitive overlaps as shown by 14 data. Meanwhile, the highest reasons of overlaps are rejecting as shown by 16 data, followed by completing as shown by 8 data; then correcting as shown by 7 data. Seeking clarification as shown by 3 data and showing agreement as 2 data. The writer conclude that overlaps in this debate are not violating. It because the overlap indicates that the candidate pay attention for the previous speaker.
