This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The source of data was the short play The Man in a Case written by Wendy Wasserstein. The data of this study were the words and the phrases found in the short play The Man in a Case which contain adjunct. The data were collected by using content analysis method. They belong to three types of adjunct, those are 13 data for circumstantial adjunct, 17 data for interpersonal adjunct, and 10 data for textual adjunct. According to Eggins and Slade (1997), there are three functions of adjuncts, namely, (1) to negotiate beyond subject-finite, (2) to express a position or assessment, and (3) to construct coherence and continuity in talk. The writer only found two functions in this study. Specifically, there were 17 data belonging to the second function and 10 data belong to the third function of adjunct. Besides, the writer categorizes 13 data as the new functions, namely to indicate a place and to indicate time action. Keywords: Adjunct, Types and functions of adjunct, The Man in a Case
