Abstract This study focuses on the types and functions of deontic modality used in The New York Time Newspaper. This study aims to explain the types of deontic modality which are found in The New York Time Newspaper. It also aims to explain the functions of deontic modality which are constructed in The New York Time Newspaper.In addition, to analyze the data, this study uses two theories proposed by Palmer (2001) to anlyze the types and the functions of deontic modality.This study is conducted by applying a descriptive qualitative research design since the data are in the form of words. The source of data isThe New York Time Newspaper in October and November edition 2016. The data of this study are four newspapers of The New York Time Newspaper in October and November edition 2016 that contain deontic modality.The data are collected by using content analysis method.The writer found 41 data. The data analysis reveals the findings covering the formulated research questions. Firstly, the types of deontic modality are demonstrated by 4 data which belong to obligative, 30 data which belong to commisive, and 7 data which belong to permisssive. Secondly, the functions of deontic modality are demonstrated by 4 data which belong to show obligation, 30 data which belong to give a promise and threats, and 7 data which belong to give permission.
