ABSTRACT Abdul Jawat. 2018 A Study of Hedges in American Gangster Movie. Thesis. English Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Dr. Masduki, M.Pd. This study analyzes the types of hedges that found in American Gangster Movie and what function that used in American Gangster Movie. The type were classified by using Prince et al (1982) and the function were classified by using Brown & Levinson (1987), Drechsel (1989), and Hatch (1992). This study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was “American Gangster” movie. The data was the utterances produced by all character which contain hedges . This study used content analysis as a method to analyze the data. In the findings the writer found 20 data which contain hedges found in “American gangster” movie. Rounder are type hedges that occur most in this movie by getting 6 of 20 data, and then 5 of 20 data belong to Adaptors, another 5 of 20 data belong to Plausibility Shields, and the last 4 of 20 data belong to attribution shields. The writer also found the function of using hedges in “American Gangster” Movie. To soften the claim getting 11 of 20 data, to soften commands, to soften disagreements, and to act as politeness strategies which each of them get 2 of 20 data, and then for other functions such as to soften complaints, and request, each of them get 1 data of 20 data. There is no hedges which is used to soften performatives found in “American gangster” movie. Keywords: pragmatics, hedges, types of hedges, the functions of hedges.
