  • INTERTEXTUALITY IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY DYSTOPIAN FICTIONS: THE HUNGER GAMES AND THE SELECTION

    ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to discover intertextual relations between two contemporary dystopian fictions The Hunger Games and The Selection. Intertexatual relations were able to be perceived by discovering dominant elements such as similarities and differences as to what the reader might think both novels potentially relate one another. Kristeva?s Intertextuality theory was employed in this study. Qualitative research was held. The method of data collections were reading, labeling and matching. Analysis data in this study applied Robert K. Yin technique. The results showed that Suzanne Collins? The Hunger Games had potentially inspired Kiera Cass? The Selection. There were 6 potential intertextual relations found, Collins? idea of burning the Games in death and blood has inspired Cass? to burn the Selection with emotions (1), Collins? idea to set district in line to determine prosperity has influenced Cass to prevail caste system to determine prosperity (2), Collins? idea to paint a futuristic Capitol city as the centerpiece of fortune has inspired Cass to paint a classic kingdom of Illéa as the centerpiece of fortune (3), Collins? idea to formulate star-crossed lovers and triangle love has infected Cass to possess complicated triangle love (4), Collins? idea of putting rebels as history has persuaded Cass to set the rebels in present instead (5). Collins? idea to prevail fame and fortune which changes life has closely inspired Cass to create fame and fortune that changes life (6). By looking at the dominant elements being compared, therefore 6 potential intertextual relations between the two literary works were discovered concerning about creativity development in which the transformation could achieve.
