ABSTRACT Marinta Yulia .R. 130511100058. A study of written language variety used by males and females in Instagram captions. Thesis. English Department of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Trunojoyo Madura University. Advisor Misnadin, S.S., M.A., Ph.D. This study focused on written language variety used used in actresses and actors Instagram captions. This study analyzed the types of written language variety, function of written language variety, what varieties mostly occur in the Instagram captions, and the difference betwen male and female language in terms of the captions actresses and actors create. The data were analyzed and classified based on the types of written language variety proposed by I Made Jendra Indrawan (2010). This study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative research. The source of data is Instagram caption, while the data were the word in the sentences of actresses and actors Instagram caption. The method of collecting data used content analysis method. The writer found three types of written language variety. Furthermore, the writer collected 34 data, after the obtained data had been collected, she identified and classified and discussed the varieties occur and finds what language variety is dominantly used is written language variety. And difference between male and female language in terms of captions males and females create. The findings and discussion shown written language varieties which exist in data. They are punctuation mark, capitalization, and abbreviation. This research shown a number of types written language varieties and how male and female are different in using language, in terms of the types the writer found Punctuation mark, Capitalization, and Abbreviation. Male and female are also different in a writing language that female tends to used expression emotional language. Meanwhile, males used formal language, and used more simple caption.
