Abstract The focus of this study is about bicultural identity portrayed by Mrs.Kuo’s family and Crisis identity portrayed by Mrs.Kuo in Diana Chang’s short story Falling Free. Bicultural identity is portrayed by Mrs.Kuo, Ying, Winston, and the crisis identity portrayed by Mrs.Kuo in the short story. Concerning this matter, after finding the ways in which portrayed by the characters. Therefore, this study is aimed to explain the ways in which bicultural identity and crisis identity portrayed by the characters in the short story. In addition, the theory of cultural identity proposed by Stuart Hall is used to be the underlying theory due to the source of data in this study which contains cultural identity issues. Moreover, this study is conducted using a qualitative descriptive method because (1) the data collected and analyzed are in form of words. (2) the research instrument in this study is the writer himself. After analyzing the short story, the conclusion of this study are found, they are: the characters such depict bicultural identity through this ways (1) believing in Chinese culture, (2) family and self identity, (3) adopting American culture, (4) History, (5) Feeling homesickness, (6) Maintaining Chinese identity. Meanwhile crisis identity portrayed by Mrs.Kuo found through these ways; (1) Denial, (2) confusing identity, (3) feeling homesickness, (4) personal conflict, (5) Feeling uncertainty.
