    Abstraction

    Abstract This study focuses on figurative languages uttered by pangade’ in engagement process. It aims to analyze the types and the functions of figurative language in engagement process. The data are analyzed and classified based on the types and the functions of figurative language proposed by Perrine (1988: 28). This study uses descriptive qualitative design. The source of the data is pangade’ in engagement process, while the data are the utterances used by pangade’ that contain figurative language. The method that is used to collect the data is observation method. The writer found six types of figurative language. There are 18 data. Six data belong to metaphor, two data belong to personification, two data belong to understatement, two data belong to simile, three data belong to symbol, and three data belong to metonymy. The writer also found five functions of figurative language, five data belong to the function to give imaginative pleasure, three data belong to the function to bring addtional imagery, two data belong to the function to add emotional intensity, seven data belong to concrete meaning in brief compass, and one data belongs to symbolize the concrete meaning.
