Advisor: Misnadin, S.S., MA., Ph.D. This study focuses on types and functions of commissive illocutionary act in the political speech The Presidential Debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump”. It aims to explain the type and the function of commissive illocutionary act. This study is conducted by applying a qualitative research design. The subject of this study is a political speech. The data of this study are utterances of commissive illocutionary act used in the political speech. The source of data are the transcripts of 2016 presidential debate. The data were collected by using the content analysis method. The writer shows both types and functions of commissive illocutionary act. The type of commissive illocutionary act as follows: promise (10 data), guarantee (3 data), refusal (6 data), threat (2 data), offer (1 data), volunteer (1 data). In terms of the function, the writer found: to get sympathy (13 data), to refuse something (6 data), to give intimidation (2 data), and to help or give something (2 data).
