    Abstraksi

    Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji dengan cara apa the double direpresentasikan dalam Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes dan Mengapa Doyle menggunakan the double dalam ceritanya. Studi ini menganalisis karakter Sherlock Holmes dan Profesor Moriarty yang mewakili sebuah simbolis the double karena mereka memiliki berbagai karakteristik dan atribut yang sama. Studi ini juga menjelaskan bagaimana the double membangun narasi detektif dalam cerita dan mencerminkan pembagian diri di masyarakat Victoria melalui tokoh Sherlock Holmes. Studi ini menggunakan desain penelitian kualitatif oleh Miles dan Huberman. Data yang dikumpulkan diambil dari narasi narator, ujaran karakter, dan dialog antar karakter yang mencakup lima cerita; A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem and The Valley of Fear. Data dikumpulkan dengan close reading dan teknik menganalisa data adalah pengumpulan data, reduksi data, tampilan data, dan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa (1) Arthur Conan Doyle yang sengaja membangun karakter Moriarty sebagai lawan dan the double dari Holmes dalam The Final Problem karena ia ingin mengakhiri cerita dengan membunuh detektifnya semenjak dia merencanakan The Final Problem untuk menjadi cerita terakhir (2) Dalam membangun narasi detektif Sherlock Holmes dengan pola rumusan cerita detektif klasik, Doyle menggunakan the double melalui dual narrative, character dynamics and detective‘s doubling criminal thought process. (3) Doyle memberikan sebuah refleksi masyarakat Victoria melalui tokoh Sherlock Holmes yang mencerminkan citra publik dan privat orang Victoria. Kata Kunci: Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, Profesor Moriarty, The Double, Dualitas.

    Abstraction

    The aim of this study is to examine in what ways the double is represented in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Why Doyle employs the double in his stories. It analyzes the character of Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty that represents a symbolic of double as they share numerous common characteristics and attributes. This study also explains how the double constructs detective narrative in the story and reflects the division of self in Victorian society through figure of Sherlock Holmes. This study applies qualitative research design by Miles and Huberman. The collected data is taken from narrator‘s narrations, characters’ utterances, and dialogues between characters which covers five stories; A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes: The Final Problem and The Valley of Fear. Data is collected by close reading and the technique of analyzing data is data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of this study finds that (1) Arthur Conan Doyle who intentionally built up the character of Moriarty as the opposite and double of Holmes in The Final Problem because he wanted to end the story by killing off his detective since he planned The Final Problem to be the last story. (2) In constructing Sherlock Holmes detective narrative with the pattern of formula of the classical detective story, Doyle employs the double through dual narrative, character dynamics and detective‘s doubling criminal thought process. (3) Doyle gives a reflection of Victorian society through figure of Sherlock Holmes who embodies the image of Victorian public and private man.
