ABSTRACT Riza, Sa’adatur R.A. 12.05.111.001.02. A Study Of Request Strategy Used by The Characters in Maleficent Movie. Thesis : English Study Program. Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty, Univesity of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor : Dr. Masduki S.Pd., M.Pd. Language is the most important aspect in human daily life because language can be used everyday to communicate with each other. It can be said that language as a role of communication that which could not separated from human’s life. Comunication happens when the listener can understand what the speaker’s said. Request is one of the ways of talking or communication with other and make a good relation. In daily life, people make requests to ask another one to do something. When people make request, they should know the situation when they want. The objective of this study is classified and identified the types and the goals of request in Maleficent movie. This study focuses analyzed the utterances produced by the characters in Maleficent movie. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used interactive data analysis to collecting the data. The researcher does the following procedures : (1) Looked for VCD of Maleficent movie and copy it in laptop. (2) Watched the movie for many time. (3) the researcher taking a note for the main data that related to the data problem would be analyzed by using the theories, concept and approach. In finding, the researcher found 30 data contain types of request and 30 data contain goals of request. Those are 6 data belong to mood derivable, 5 data belong to performative, 3 data belong to hedged performative, 4 data belong to obligation statement, 2 data belong to want statement, 3 data belong to suggestory formulae, 5 data belong to query preparatory, 1 data belong to strong hints, and 1 data belong to mild hints, and also 10 data belong to request for good, 7 data belong to request for initation, 6 data belong to request for cessation and 7 data belong to request for join activity.
