    ABSTRACT Mustatiroh. 12.05.1.1.1.00085. A Study Of Pragmatic Failure In Sma Sabilillah Sampang. Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Trunojoyo University of Madura. Advisor: Dr. Masduki, M.Pd. This study focuses on pragmatic failure which occurs in conversation between students and a teacher at SMA Sabilillah Sampang. The source of data is the conversation between students and a teacher at SMA Sabilillah Sampang. This study aims to find out the kinds and causes of pragmatic failure occurs in conversation between students, and a teacher at SMA Sabilillah Sampang. This study is conducted by descriptive qualitative research design proposed by Bogdan and Biklen (1982). The research instrument in this study is the writer herself. The data is collected by using content analysis method proposed by Krippendroff (2012). Interactive data analysis method is used in data analysis proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The writer obtains 18 data of pragmatic failure that are categorized as pragmalinguistic failure. The 18 data of pragmalinguistic failure are classified into interpretative pragmalinguistic failure 6 data and productive pragmalinguistic failure 12 data. The writer also finds 18 data of pragmatic failure are caused by linguistic proficiency. Keywords: Pragmatic Failure, Kinds and Causes of Pragmatic Failure.
