ABSTRACT This study focuses on figurative languages. It aims to analyze the types and the functions of figurative language in the happy prince short story. The data are analyzed and classified based on the types and the functions of figurative language proposed by Perrine (1988). This study uses descriptive qualitative design. The source of the data is short story the happy prince, while the data are the sentences in the short story which contain figurative language. The method used to collect the data was Content-analysis proposed by Khotari (2004), The components of data analysis are data collection, data reduction data display and conclusion by Miles & Huberman (1994). The writer found eight types of figurative language such as metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, allegory, irony, and paradox. The writer also found two functions of figurative language such as to give imaginative pleasure, and to bring additional imagery.
