Abstract: The study focuses on the morphological process of affixation. This study used the short story The Magic Barrel by Bernard Malamud as source of data. This study aims to find out the answer of research problems (1) what types of affixation, (2) the part of speech change in the short story. The writer used qualitative method. The data were collected by reading and analyzing the short story The Magic Barrel as source of data. In analyzing the data, the writer used interactive model analysis. The writer analyzed the data in several steps; they are classifying the data, displaying the data, and drawing conclusion. The result of the study is found 123 data for derivational affixes and 37 data for inflectional affixes. The dominant types of affixation is derivational affixes, and the suffix is ‘-ly’. Based on the result, there are 160 data changing of part of speech of the word influenced by 17 kinds of affix, such as affix ‘-ance’ changes part of speech Verb – Noun, affix ‘-er’ changes Adjective – Adverb, affix ‘-ion’ changes Verb-Noun, affix ‘-ment’ changes Verb-Noun, affix ‘-ly’ changes Adjective-Adverb, affix ‘ing’ changes VerbAdjective, affix ‘ful’ changes Adjective-Adverb, affix ‘-ness’ changes Adjective-Noun, affix ‘-able’ changes Verb-Adjective, affix ‘-al’ changes Noun-Adjective, affix ‘-ing’ changes Noun-Verb, affix ‘ –less’ changes NounAdjective, affix ‘-y’ changes Adjective-Adverb, affix ‘–ing’ changes NounAdjective, affix ‘-ly’ changes Preposition-Adverb, affix ‘-ive’ changes NounAdjective, and affix ‘-ity’ changes Adjective- Noun.
