Adaptation is the process of transforming one form of art into another form. It transforms one medium into another medium such as transforming a novel into film. Nowadays, there are many films that are adapted from best seller novel. In the adaptation process, some changes occur in the film. It is because film and novel are produced in different way. Pursuant to this explanation, this study focuses on the transformation of the narrative elements from the Paper Towns by John Green into film that has the same title. This study aims to explain the process of adaptation that occurs in the intrinsic elements on Paper Towns novel into film. To analyze the adaptation process of the novel into film, the theory of adaptation by Linda Seger is used. There are three processes of adaptation. The first adaptation processes are condensing and expanding the material. There are two processes of condensing and one expanding process of the plot. In the setting of the film, there are four processes of condensing and one expanding process. Meanwhile there are fourteen characters omitted in the film. The second is making the film commercial. The process to making the film commercial includes four processes such as add sex scene, create the main character, changing the ending and strengthening the story line. The last is varied changing. The varied changing process of the plot occurs in the end of the film. The setting of place in the film also experiencing varied changing. Meanwhile, there is only one character that has been experiencing varied changing process. This study is conducted using qualitative design because (1) the data collected and analyzed are in the form of words. The data of this study are the words or utterances, dialogue, the characters or author’s narration in both sources of data, (2) the key instrument of this study is the writer herself. After analyzing the novel and the film, it can be concluded that the film experience thirty processes of adaptation. The process involves the aspects of narrative elements in novel into film that consist of the plot, characters and setting. Key Words: Novel, Film, Narrative Elements, Adaptation.
