This study focuses on materialism represented by the properties and the main character in The Rocking-Horse Winner and The Necklace. This study is to find some determinants of materialism that relate to one’s demographic background, thus shed some light on who would be the group of people that are more susceptible to the materialistic values. This study is conducted by using a qualitative research because the data are in the form short story. The data of this study are of words, sentences, or paragraph in The Rocking-Horse Winner and The Necklace that represent of Materialism. The data of this study are conducted by using observation method through note taking technique and to analyze the data, the writer uses the content analysis. In addition, to analyze the data this study uses Materialism theory. The result of this study proved that Materialism represented in both stories. In The Rocking-Horse Winner there are two characteristics of materialism. They are Possessiveness and lower order needs. While the characteristics of materialism in The Necklace there are possessive, envy, success, happiness, and centrality. And the influence of materialism in both stories is feeling of dissatisfaction of life that make the main characters fell more suffer.
