ABSTRACT Sulihah. 11.05.111.000.92. The Barthes’ Five Codes in Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire. Thesis. English Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Trunojoyo University. Adivsor: Dr. Suryo Tri Saksono This study focuses on the semiotics theory exactly five narrative codes of Roland Barthes that are found in Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named desire. This study aims to explain the kind of The Barthes’ Five Narrative Codes which are taken from Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire. In addition, to analyze the data, this study uses semiotic theory, five narrative codes. Moreover, this study is conducted by using a qualitative research because the data are in the form of words. The data of this study are the the characters’ utterances and author’s narration which are taken from Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire. The technique of collecting data is by reading, rereading, reduced the data. After analyzing the drama, it can be concluded that A Streetcar Named Desire shows the Roland Barthes’ five narrative codes. It shows the symbols namely name of Blanche DuBois, belle reve, and elysian field and other forms related to the story. Keywords : Semiotic theory, five narrative codes, symbols
