    ABSTRACT Amina, Siti. 2015. Medium Transition from Bernhard Schlink into Stephen Daldry’s The Reader. Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Erika Citra Sari Hartanto, S.S, M.Hum. Adaptation as the process of transforming one form into another form had been used before the last of 20th century until nowadays. One of the transforming was the adaptation process from written literary work as the original work into film as the adaptation. Regarding the transformation occurred in adaptation process, this study focus on the transformation of the narrative elements and making the film commercial from the novel as the original work into film as the adaptation entitled The Reader. Furthermore, the novel and film adaptation have different year publish that brought many condense and expand materials from the novel into the adaptation. This study was conducted by using qualitative research design as the data collected and analyzed was in form of words, utterances, dialogue, or author’s narration in both source of data, and also the key instrument of this study is the writer herself. The data of this study were taken from the novel of Bernhard Schlink and the film of Stephen Daldry entitled The Reader. This study used a basic theory of the theory of adaptation by Linda Seger. There were three processes of the adaptation; condensing and expanding the materials, making the film commercial, and varied changing. After analyzing the adaptation process from the novel into the film, it can be concluded that thirty six processes occurred in condensing and expanding the materials of narrative elements both of works. Then, fifteen process in making the film commercial, those are eight processes in strengthening the story line, four processes of making the sympathetic, likeable, identifiable characters, while the processes of making the sex scenes proofs the theme of film. The last is three processes for changing the ending from novel to film. Key Words : Adaptation, Condensing and Expanding Process, Novel, Film.
