    Abstraction

    The aim of this study was to explain the values of Sartre’s existentialism in The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. The reader told about a life of Hanna is 36 years old and Michael is 15 years old. They had controversial relationship in Nazi era. This Study used Sartre’s existentialism. In the theory had explained six values of existentialism. They were existence precedes essence, abandonment or freedom, bad faith (anxiety, anguish, avoid), alienation or estrangement, Absurdity and death. In the theory also had explained the characteristic of being for itself that influence Hanna’s and Michael’s character representing the values of Sartre’s existentialism. The data analysis of this research used qualitative method by Denzin and Lincoln. Methods of data collection were done by collecting, displaying, and making conclusion or verification of the data. The result of this study found there were five values of Sartre’s existentialism which were reflected by Hanna’s character. Those were existence precedes essence, abandonment or freedom, bad faith (anxiety, anguish, avoid), alienation or estrangement and death. Whereas there were four values of Sartre’s existentialism which were reflected by Michael’s characters. Those are existence precedes essence, abandoment or freedom, bad faith (anxiety, anguish, avoid), and alienation or estragement. Both of Hanna and Michael described being for itself.
