ABSTRACT The purpose of this article deals with an analysis of directive utterance in Avatar movie script. The objectives of this article are to find out types of directive utterance, the meaning of directive the Jake Sully’s utterances, and the most frequent occurrence type occurs. The article was conducted by using qualitative research. The movie script was analyzed using pragmatics approach. The data are from all utterances produced by Jake Sully as main character. From all the utterances, there are six types of directive utterance found in Jake Sully utterances, those are: requestives (52,93%), questions (25,75%), requirements (10,69%), prohibitive (2,03%), permissive (3,25%), and advisories (5,35%). Among directive utterance types existed, requestive is the most frequently type appeared in the Avatar movie script, the prohibitive is the lowest frequency used by main character. Furthermore, to describe the meaning of directive utterances on Jake Sully’s utterances, the writer used six components of illocutionary force; the point of illocutionary force, the mode of achievement, the propositional condition, the preparatory condition, sincerity condition, and the degree of strength.
