Abstract The purpose of this study is to elaborate narrative codes in novel entitled The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. It develops the study using Roland Barthes theory. The Reader tells about love, ashamed, guilt, and mystery. There are two major characters, Michael who is fifteen years old and Hanna who is thirty six years old. The story of the novel is influenced by Germany War which refers to the condition of second generation. In the novel, there is unusual love between young man and lady. This study uses narrative codes based on Roland Barthes theory. The theory applies in novel entitled The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. The data analysis uses qualitative method by Taylor and Kvale. The writer marks data by choosing the literary work. Then, the writer reads the source of data intensely and classifies the data. As the result, the novel contains narrative codes. The writer analyzes five narrative codes that reflected in Bernhard Schlink The Reader. Narrative codes are hermeneutic code, semes or signifier code, symbolic code, proairetic code, and cultural code. Key words: Narrative codes, enigma code, connotative code, symbolic code, proairetic code, and cultural code.
