    ABSTRACT Mawadah, Nisfai. 10.05.111.00034. A Comparative Study of Past Tense Error made by the Students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” and the Students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah” in Surabaya. Thesis. English Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisors: (I) Iqbal Nurul Azhar, S.S, M.Hum., (II) Diah Ikawati Ayuningtias, S.S, M.Pd. This study investigates and compares the past tense error conducted by normal and mentally retarded (abnormal) students. It is interesting because normal and mentally retarded students have different learning process and capability in accepting the materials in the lerning process. This study is aimed to find out the types of past tense error made by the students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” and the students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah” and whether or not the similarities and differences occur in their narrative compositions. This study is expected to be useful for English teachers to help them identify the different characters of errors conducted by normal and abnormal students. This study is qualitative research. The data are collected from the narrative composition made by the students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” and the students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah”. The subjects are 3 students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” and 3 students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah”. There are three related processes in the data analysis; reducing data, displaying data and making conclusion. After analyzing data, some conclussion are drawn. They are: (1) The three students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” made error in irregularization by adding –ed 11 times, substitution of simple non past 9 times, omission of auxiliary verb 2 times, omission of to be 1 time, omission of be 1 time, and disagreement of subject and tense 3 times. The total of all error types made by the students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” is 27. (2) The three students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah” made error in substitution of simple non past 9 times, omission of auxiliary verb 3 times, and disagreement of subject and tense 6 times. The total of all error types made by the students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah” is 18. (3) The similarities are ; both of the three students made error in substitution of simple non past, omission of auxiliary of verb, and disagreement of subject and tense. (4) The diffrences are the three students of SMP “Hidayatul Ummah” do not make error types in irregularization by adding –ed, omission of to be and omission of be, while the three students of SLTPLB “Alpha Kumara Wardana” make those errors.
