    Abstraction

    ABSTRACT Haris, Moh. 10.05.1.1.1.00018. Moss’ Anxiety as Portrayed in McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men Thesis. English Study Program of Faculty of and Cultural Sciences, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Advisor: Rif’ah Inayati, S.S., M.A. This study entitled Moss’ Anxiety as Portrayed in McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men. It aims to explain what makes Moss experiences anxiety and how does he overcomes his anxiety. Therefore, this study focuses on the causes of Moss’ anxiety and also his way to defense himself after getting anxiety. It concerns the narrator’s narrations, Moss and Carla’s utterances, and also several characters’ utterances. Hence, anxiety and defense mechanism theory of Sigmund Freud is a tool to analyze this study. This study is qualitative research, because the writer is the key instrument and the data are described in the form of words. Consequently, the utterances of several characters which have the relation to Moss anxiety are used to reveal the cause of Moss’ anxiety. Hence the data collection is done simultaneously with the data analysis. After this study has been done, it uncovers the causes of Moss’ anxiety and also his rationalization as the defense of his anxiety. There are three causes of anxiety that experienced by Moss. Those are cause of neurotic anxiety, cause of reality anxiety and also cause of moral anxiety. The causes of Moss’ anxiety related to the money he found.
