The research concerned with the use of the word ‘sorry’ by English study program students of University of Trunojoyo Madura in informal conversation. This research was done to describe the purposes of the use of the wod ‘sorry’ in informal conversation among the English study program students of University of Trunojoyo Madura and to describe the most dominant purpose used by the English study program students of University of Trunojoyo Madura. The researcher used Barr and Gilberry’s theory as the basis of the analysis of the study. There are three categories of the word ‘sorry’; apologizing, attracting attention and averting a potential problem. The researcher employed qualitative approach. The technique of collecting data was observation. The data were collected by recording the conversation of English study program students. The researcher analyzed the data used interactive model analysis. The researcher counted the number of the dominant purposes of the word ‘sorry’ utterances used by English study program students of University of Trunojoyo Madura. From the three categories, the researcher found that only two type of the purposes that were used by the participants. It is used for apologizing (36,6%) and attracting attention (10%). The rest of the purposes that was not found in this research was averting a potential problem. Besides, the researcher found several purposes that were not suitable with the three purposes. They were denial unacceptable statements (40%), refusal negative things (10%) and asking times to think (3,3%). Keywords: sorry, purposes, informal conversation.
