This study focuses on conversational implicature uttered by the main characters in Dinner for Schmucks film. This study aims to identify the kind of conversational implicature mostly uttered by the main characters in Dinner for Schmucks film and the mechanisms used by the main characters to utter conversational implicature in Dinner for Schmucks film. In addition, to analyze the data, this study uses Grice’s theory who divides conversational implicature into generalized and particularized conversational implicature. This study also uses the theory of Grice related to the mechanisms of creating conversational implicature. Moreover, this study is conducted using a qualitative design because the data are in the form of words. The data of this study are the utterances of the main characters (Tim and Barry) when they have conversation. The data of this study are collected by using content analysis method. The data analysis reveals the findings covering the formulated research questions. Firstly, the kind of conversational implicature mostly uttered by the main characters in Dinner for Schmucks film is particularized conversational implicature. It is demonstrated by 20 data or 68,9% of the data categorized as particularized conversational implicature. The second position goes to generalized conversational implicature. It is shown by 7 data or 24,2% of the data classified into generalized conversational implicature. In addition, in Dinner for Schmucks, it is found that one conversation contains both generalized and particularized conversational implicature. It is proved by 2 data or 6,9% of the data which contains both generalized and particularized conversational implicature. Moreover, the main characters use the mechanisms of standard implicature and a deliberately flouting four maxims of cooperative principle to utter conversational implicature.
