Sastra adalah tulisan imajinatif atau kreatif, terutama nilai seni yang diakui. Tidak ada bagian dari kehidupan yang belum pernah ditulis tentang, sehingga bisa mencerminkan pengalaman penulis. Melalui kreativitas penulis, karya sastra akan menjadi manis dan bermanfaat. Ruang lingkup penelitian ini adalah Kritik Baru dalam arti luas dan penerapan teori dalam menganalisis puisi, terutama di puisi William Blake yang berjudul “The Chimney Sweeper.” Studi ini membahas tentang pencitraan yang terdapat di puisi “Chimney Sweeper." Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan berikut, (1) Jenis citra di "The Chimney Sweeper," dan (2) Pesan yang dapat dipelajari dari puisi itu. Melalui penelitian kualitatif yang luas ditemukan bahwa berbagai jenis citra yang ditemukan di Blake "The Chimney Sweeper," tetapi jelas bahwa citra visual mendominasi keberadaan pencitraan dalam puisi ini. Blake menggunakan citra visual untuk memperkuat tema dalam sebuah puisi. Pesan yang paling penting yang dapat dipelajari dari puisi yang indah ini adalah cara bagaimana bersikap terhadap kondisi, baik buruk atau baik. Puisi ini mengajarkan orang bagaimana untuk bersyukur kepada Tuhan. Kata Kunci: the chimney sweeper, Tuhan, citra.

Literature is imaginative or creative writing, especially of recognized artistic value. There is no part of life that has never been written about, so it could reflect the author’s experience. Through the creativity of the author, literary works will be sweet and useful. The scope of this study is New Criticism in broad sense and the application of the theory in analyzing poetry, especially in William Blake’s “The Chimney Sweeper.” The discussion of the study is limited on the kinds of imagery which are found on words and phrases employed in William Blake’s “The Chimney Sweeper.” This study is aimed to answer the following questions, (1) Kinds of imagery in “The Chimney Sweeper,” and (2) Messages that can be learnt from the poem. Through extensive qualitative research it is found that many kinds of imagery are found in Blake’s “The Chimney Sweeper,” but it is clear that visual image dominates the existence of imagery in this poem. Blake uses visual image to strengthen a theme in a poem. The most important message that can be learnt from this beautiful poem is the way how to behave toward a condition, either bad or good. This poem teaches people how to thank to God appropriately. Key Word: chimney sweeper, God, imagery.
