ABSTRACT The focus of this study is about Loneliness experienced by Jerry in Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story. Loneliness is an enduring condition of an emotional state that arises when a person feels estranged from, is misunderstood or rejected by, lacks appropriate social partners for a desire activity. In addition, the theory of Loneliness is used, because the source of data of this study which contains about the type, cause, and the effect of loneliness. Moreover, this study is conducted using a qualitative design because (1) the data are collected and analyzed in the form of words. The data of this study are narrator’s explanations and the character’s utterances related to the loneliness experienced by Jerry. (2) the key instrument of this study is the researcher himself. After analyzing the drama the writer finds the answers of research problem. They are: Types of loneliness and Effect of loneliness that Jerry suffers in The Zoo Story’s drama. Such as Positive, Negative, Emotional and Social loneliness, Jerry’s loneliness only involve three of them. They are Negative, Emotional, and Social loneliness. (1) Jerry’s Negative loneliness, Jerry gets an unpleasant and inadmissible lack of relation with the other people. (2) Emotional loneliness, Jerry tells to Peter that he does not have parents and aunt. They are passed away. (3) Social loneliness, the people around him are self-independent or individual person. Effects of Jerry’s loneliness. They are: homosexual and suicide. (1) Homosexual, Jerry undergoes with a Greek boy. (2) Suicide, Jerry feels he will be alone again because Peter wants to go home.
