ABSTRACT Amalia, Riska. 08.05.111.00001. Portrait of England’s Social Condition in the 18th Century in Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. Thesis. English Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Trunojoyo University Madura. Advisors: (I) Dr. Suryo Tri Saksono (II) Rif’ah Inayati, S.S, M.A This study uses qualitative design, because this study analyses about literary work. Literary work that is used in this study is Northanger Abbey. It is a novel that is written by Jane Austen. This study is concerned with portrait of England’s social condition in the 18th century that is portrayed in Northanger Abbey. To strengthen about it, this study uses sociology of work. Sociology of work is used in this study, because it is focussed on the literary work itself. It is used to prove that Northanger Abbey is a novel that portrays real life. After analysing problem and data of this study, it can be concluded that Northanger Abbey portrays real life of England in the 18th century. England in the 18th century has existance of industrial revolution. It gives influence for several aspects of England at that time. It influences English society. It creates status hierarchy. It also influences England customs in the 18th century, such as; consumerism, fashion and reading. It also influences marriage in England in the 18th century.
